Blocked Milk Ducts

Blocked milk ducts are a common problem for many women who are breast-feeding. A blocked milk duct will produce reddened skin over the area where the milk ducts are blocked, with a hard, painful lump in the breast. If the blocked duct does not spontaneously clear in a day, physiotherapy treatment is extremely effective in resolve the blockage. A physiotherapist will use ultrasound, moist heat and massage to the affected milk duct. Also, the nursing mother will be taught nursing positions which will assist in clearing the blockage, self-massage techniques and given preventative education. Typically, the blockage will clear with 2-3 physiotherapy treatments.
